Summercamp 2018 Neighborhood Stories Through Food

Fortune cookies, halo-halo, dumplings and more!

Our first week of Summercamp @The Wing will have campers taste their way through our Chinatown-International District. Stories behind flavors and foods will be shared as the campers learn about our vibrant community and the restaurants that create it. We'll also be taking what we learned back into the museum by trying out techniques and dishes back in our kitchen and art classrooms.

The typical day of camp during this week will be structured to include a tasting of a special dish and an activity highlighting an element or technique to that dish. Campers will be taken on excursions around the surrounding Chinatown-International District during camp hours.

Please be advised that choosing our 7/30 date will register your camper for the entire week of camp from 7/30-8/3. Registration information should be filled out for one's camper. If questions are not applicable please write n/a in answer box.

Soaring dragons, ocean faring sea serpents, deep-forest dwelling beasts are all waiting to be discovered during our Mythical Creatures camp. From sky to sea, land to stars--campers will hear tales of the magical creatures that fill the world in Asian and Pacific Islander stories. Fantasy, imagination and creativity will come together during each fun-filled day of camp.

Our art-based camp will take our stories and transform them into fantastical works of art that campers will make throughout the week.

Please be advised that choosing our 8/6 date will register your camper for the entire week of camp from 8/6-8/10. Registration information should be filled out for one's camper. If questions are not applicable please write n/a in answer box.

Teensway 2018

The "Ghost-Signs" of our Chinatown-International District linger from decades past and serve as a reminder of Jazz-clubs, comfortable hotel rooms and businesses long closed. We'll use these historic hand-painted signs as inspiration for our 2018 Teensway Program. Taking a closer look at the Ghost Signs and making connections to our CID neighborhood, our youth will try their hand at an old-fashioned yet still popular medium: hand painted signage.

Our Teaching Artist, Henry Luke, will share some of his experiences as a mural artist and sign-painter with our Teensway participants. Our teens will practice their hand at drafting letters with ink, pencil and markers, designing on a large scale and cultivating their own arts practice. All of their techniques they've learned will be showcased and applied to painting a public mural in the CID!

Please be advised that choosing our 4/28 date will register your teen for the entire Teensway 2018 Program. Program dates are as follows: 4/28, 5/5, 5/12, 5/19, 5/26, 6/2 and 6/9.  Registration information should be filled out for one's teen. If questions are not applicable please write n/a in answer box.
