We invite you to join us for a special member event celebrating the exhibition opening of Side by Side on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Exhibition preview and reception including:
- 5:30pm Museum open for a member and special guest reception and viewing of Side by Side: Nihonmachi Scenes by Tokita, Nomura and Fujii
- 6:00pm Short program in the Community Hall
- 7:30 pm Museum Closes
Side By Side features the work of three Issei painters, Kamekichi Tokita (1897-1948), Kenjiro Nomura (1896-1956), and Takuichi Fujii (1891-1964), who captured urban viewpoints from Seattle’s flourishing pre-WWII Japantown. From the familiar streets and alleys of the Chinatown-International District to now-lost storefronts, homes, and urban vistas, this exhibition shares the perspectives of the artists who painted side by side tracing the pathways of belonging in 1930s Seattle.
